Farmington’s Delbert Anderson recipient of the 2023 First Peoples Fund Cultural Capital Fellowship

Jazz trumpeter Delbert Anderson has been selected for the fellowship that honors and supports the work of artists & culture bearers who are committed to passing on ancestral knowledge & cultural practices within their tribal communities. Anderson is also artistic Director at D’DAT (Dine’ Delbert Anderson Trio) Management, a New Mexico Arts Commissioner, and teaches ar San Juan College.

Anderson has been featured on JazzTimes, Grammy.com, NASA, NPR Music Top 10, Smithsonian Magazine, Yahoo/Mic.com, TEDx, PBS, FNX Television and much more. He was also awarded Arts Forward 2022 funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, 2021-22, the Presenters Consortium for Jazz Award from Chamber Music America funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the 2022 Collective Spirit Award by First Peoples Fund, 2022 and the Jazz Road Creative Residency from South Arts funded by Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Anderson preserves his cultural music by creating a foundation of new Diné melodies and fuses them through jazz, jam and funk. Each path serves Indigenous culture through stories, healing, history and collaboration.

DDAT will go on a mentored tour with Third Hour (Farmington Youth Jazz Ensemble). Their tour will consist of 5 venues in 5 cities from June 7 – 11, 2023. During their tour DDAT will share music experiences over hikes, meals and being on the road.
